When a taco night is in your forecast, the first cocktail that tends to come to mind is probably the margarita. However, we tend to fancy the Paloma, a super refreshing tequila based cocktail. The recipe for this amazingly delicious drink is easy and foolproof. All you need is Tequila, Grapefruit, Grapefruit Juice or soda, sparkling soda and a simple syrup. Oh, and of course something shimmery to make the rim sparkle.
When we are making tequila drinks, we tend to favor Casamigos– which was perfect for this recipe since white tequila is the way to go. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it is super smooth and founded by the deliciously handsome, George Clooney. I bet that is what gives it that smooth finish. 😛
When it comes to the grapefruit aspect, some use grapefruit soda, while others use grapefruit juice. We always opt for the juice over the soda. To give it some bubbles, we top it off with a sparking soda- I think that gives it a more clean and refreshing flavor. The flavored sodas, in our opinion, are too syrupy. To give it even more freshness, we squeeze some fresh juice from the grapefruits as well.
Now onto that something sparkly- a salted rim, obviously. Or a sugared one if you are more of a sweet person than a salty one. Thankfully for us, Amanda Chen, founder of saltypaloma.com, has given us something other than table salt to jazz up those rims. She mixes up a variety of salty and sugary flavors that totally take your cocktail to the next level. For this recipe we used the Fiesta rimmer- which combines grapefruit, lime, and Himalayan sea salt. It was the perfect finish to the drink.
So, there ya have it- the perfectly delicious, classic Paloma. These cocktails definitely helped us to forget that summer break is coming to an end. Instead of work on the brain, we relaxed, sipped, and enjoyed the sweet summer air and of course the tequila.
Salty Girl Paloma
- 1.5 ounces Casamigos Tequila
- 3 ounces grapefruit juice (store bought or fresh squeeze)
- Soda water
- Salty Girl Fiesta rimmer (link in post)
- Grapefruit (zest, juice, and slices)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
The Simple Syrup - Start by adding the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Stir and cook on stove top until all sugar has been dissolved. Transfer contents to a small jar and place in the refrigerator to cool.
In a shaker, combine tequila, grapefruit juice (3 ounces), and the cooled simple syrup (1 ounce). Shake until well combined.
Moisten the rim of your cocktail glass with a slice of grapefruit or lime. Dip the glass into the salty girl Fiesta rimmer (*note: pour rimmer contents onto a flat plate beforehand for easy dipping)
Pour the contents from the shaker into your cocktail glass over a large ice cube and top with sparkling soda water.
Zest a grapefruit over the top and garnish with a pineapple leaf and a slice of grapefruit.
