With just a couple weeks left until Valentine’s Day, we figured now would be a good time to share one of our favorite Valentine’s Day treats, our heart shaped cherry hand pies. Whether you are celebrating with a partner or your gal pals, these cuties will definitely get you into the Valentines Day spirit.
The best part about them is the total simplicity. With just 4 simple ingredients, you can whip these guys up in no time at all. The biggest time saver of all is using store bought cherry pie filling and refrigerated pie crusts. If you prefer homemade crust and filling, go for it…. but for us, store bought was the perfect shortcut. The rest of the ingredients are staple pantry items: eggs + milk for an egg wash and sugar for dusting.
So, we gathered all of our ingredients, and of course our heart shaped cookie cutter, set our Amazon Alexa to play some Ella Fitzgerald, poured up some bubbly, and enjoyed a perfect Saturday afternoon of baking.
Trust us, when you serve these to your loved ones, they will definitely fall in love. Not only are they super delicious, but they’re also easy on the eyes. What’s even better is that they are completely versatile. If you don’t like cherry filling, don’t use cherry filling. Use whatever your little heart desires: blueberries, apples, apricot, you get the point. Also, I love the crust we used because it isn’t overly sweet. So go ahead and stuff these puppies with something savory if you’d like. On Super Bowl, we came up with some football shaped meat pies, and they were delicious too!! Have fun and be creative with it.
Check out the recipe below for these super simple and delicious cherry hand pies, and surprise your sweetie this Valentines Day. If you don’t have a sweetie, make them with your gal pals. Or make them for yourself…just as long as you’re making them. Serve them warm and with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Pop one, two, or even three in your mouth because they are just THAT delicious.
Valentine's Day Cherry Hand Pies
- Store bought refrigerated pie crust (room temperature)
- 1-11 oz. can cherry pie filling
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp. coconut milk (or regular milk)
- Heart shaped cookie cutter (or shape of choice)
Take pie crust out of refrigerator and bring to room temperature (about 20 minutes).
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Roll out crust until about 1/4 inch thick.
Use cookie cutter to cut out shapes (remember, you will need two hearts per pie).
Make an egg wash by beating the egg with milk.
Brush the edge of the bottom heart with the egg wash.
Using a mini ice cream scooper, scoop some of the cherry pie filling into the center (be sure not to over fill as it will seep out of the seem).
Score the top layer heart with an "x" to allow steam to escape.
Place the top layer over the bottom cherry filled heart and crimp edges using a fork to seal.
Brush egg wash over the entire top and dust with a generous amount of granulated sugar,
Pop into preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly on a wire rack.
Serve warm and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a glass of milk!
